Celebrating the life of
Ellen Simonds Stout
October 04, 1927 - December 23, 2008
Ellen Simonds Stout, 81, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah, GA on December 23, 2008. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Simonds of Brookline, MA and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lyman of the The Vale, Waltham, MA. Born in Brookline, she attended the Winsor School and Bradford, Jr. College. She served for many years as a trustee of The Mariner's House in East Boston, was honored for her many years of volunteer service as a member of the Ladies Visiting Committee at the MA General Hospital in Boston and was active in alumnae affairs at the Winsor School. She was a member of the Garden Club of America, the Chestnut Hill Garden Club, the Cohasset Garden Club, the Trustees Garden Club of Savannah, the Cohasset Yacht Club and The Landings Club in Savannah. An avid golfer and tennis player, she served as Head of Ladies Golf and Head of Ladies Tennis at the Country Club in Brookline, MA. She was also the only female to serve on the Executive Committee of the U.S. Open Golf Tournament held at The Country Club in Brookline in 1988. Also an avid sailor from her many summers spent in Cohasset, MA, she was the National Junior Rookie Sailing Champion at age 11. She would joke that she is still the National Junior Sailing Champion because that particular class of boat was dropped from National competition the following year.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, William S. Stout of Chestnut Hill, MA and Savannah; her son, William S. Stout, Jr. of Holliston, MA; daughter-in-law, Janet Stout; grandchildren, Will and Julia Stout; her daughter, Ellen L. Stout of Quincy, MA; her sister, Susan C. Page of Greenport, NY and Hilton Head Island, SC; sister, Amy C. Naimi of Chestnut Hill, MA and nieces and nephews in the Boston, MA Charleston, SC, and Newcastle, ME areas.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church and in Chestnut Hill, MA at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Ladies Visiting Committee, Mass General Hospital, 55 Fruit Street, Boston, MA 02114 or Winsor School, Pilgrim Road, Boston, MA 02215.
